FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Donald W. Martin, II--P894219 Wild, WONDERFUL Rt. 1 Box 9 Made in the USA Policy Comment Dear Sirs: Having read the pro and con editorials in an issue of USA Today earlier this month, I felt compelled to write and comment on the proposed changes being considered regarding the "Made in USA" labeling of products. I am opposed to the proposed changes to allow the misleading labeling of products. The current labeling requirements are accurate and provide discriminating consumers accurate information upon which they can make purchasing decisions. For many consumers, "Made in the USA", or any other labeling of manufacturing origin, carries little or no meaning, and therefore the proposed changes are irrelevant to them. But, for the consumers that are genuinely interested in the origins of the products that they are considering purchasing, accurate labeling of manufacturing is critical in their decision-making: Misleading labels are a disservice and injustice to them. I'm not going to get up on a soap-box and claim that I only buy American; that wouldn't be accurate. What is accurate is, I consciously look at the origin of manufacturing, and many times use it in making my selections. There is no convincing, valid reason to change the requirements for a product to carry the "Made in USA" label. The only reason to lessen the requirements, is to deceive those consumers who may have a true interest in where the products they purchase are manufactured. Please do not devalue the "Made in USA" label. Please continue to maintain the truth in advertising that allows conscientious consumers to make informed decisions. Thank you. Sincerely, Donald W. Martin, IIDonald W. Martin, II c: Senator Robert C. Byrd |
