FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning R. D. Wilhoit--P894219 1816 Rolling Hills Road May 15, 1997 U.S. Policy Commission Gentlemen: It is very disturbing to me that the Federal Trade Commission would consider relaxing the requirements for products that are allowed to use a "Made in USA" label. For many years in my industry the Federal Trade Commission has had a very relaxed position on the amount of foreign content of finished product that can use a "Made in USA" designation. Any attempt to relax the rules to appease retailers and their lobbyists will send a false message to U.S. consumers about the content of products that are "supposed" to be made in the U.S. Companies should be required to mark the percent of foreign content on the products that they sell in the U.S. If they are not made in the USA, then the companies should not be allowed to mark them "Made in USA." I strongly urge that our Government not relax our already weak position on the marking of foreign goods as "Made in the USA." Sincerely, R. D. WilhoitR. D. Wilhoit RDW/jcb CC:The Honorable Robert C.
