Federal Trade Commission Received Documents [8/14/95] B18354900316 Secretary William J Lyness P.O. Box 210261 Auke Bay, Alaska 99821-0261 AUG 1 4 August 8, 1995 Federal Trade Commission Office of the Secretary "Made in the USA" Sixth Street and Pennsylvania Ave. NW Washington, D.C. 20580 Dear Sir or Madam, I read with interest an article in USA TODAY concerning shoes made by New Balance and labeled as "Made in the USA" even though they had foreign content. I believe that for a product to be labeled "Made in the USA", it should have a minimum of seventy percent US content and in addition a similar amount of the assembly be performed in the U.S. Furthermore, only products meeting this requirement would be allowed to display an American flag or any similar representation of the American flag. It upsets me to see a display of American flag lapel pins made in Taiwan. In addition, any individual or corporation which falsely sells, labels or advertises a product as "Made in the USA" should be made to suffer the most severe consequences. Very truly yours, William J. Lyness
