Federal Trade Commission Received Documents Aug 4 1995 B18354900310 Secretary July 31, 1995 Federal Trade Commission Office of the Secretary "Made is U.S.A." Washington, D.C. Dear Secretary: I was recently shopping for a new pair of running shoes. I was trying to determine which of the final three selections I would purchase. I selected the New Balance 998. The purchase price of 109.99 was twenty dollars more than that of the Nike shoe I was considering. I made my final choice in large part due to the Made in U.S.A. label, feeling that it was worth paying a bit more in support of U.S. business and labor. I was very disappointed when I came across the article in the Arizona Republic (while on vacation) that brought my attention to the fact that the label was misleading. I urge the FTC to demand truth in advertising and labeling. Had I known that a part of the shoe was constructed in China I never would have purchased them. I think that the "Made in USA" label should be applied only to products fully manufactured in the USA allowing only for raw materials coming from abroad. Sincerely, John Masterjohn PO Box 629 Mount Sinai, NY 11766
