Federal Trade Commission Received Documents Jan 24 1996 B18354900113 Secretary 15675 Russell Allen Park, MI 48101 January 12, 1996 Mr. Robert Pitofsky Chairman Federal Trade Commission Room 159 6th Street and Pennsylvania, NW Washington, DC 20580 Re: "Made In U.S.A." Label Dear Sir: As a member of the "Buy American Union Label Committee" of the UAW, and a retired General Motors Corporation worker, I wish to commend you on the job you have been doing as Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, and to voice my opposition to the proposed ruling regarding "Made in U.S.A." labeling. I believe it is important that items that are labeled "Made in U.S.A." must truly be made in the United States. Items that are assembled or partially assembled of parts or other components originating in other countries MUST NOT CARRY A "MADE IN U.S.A." LABEL. This is not an isolationist issue. I am definitely in favor of free world trade, but I do not believe that falsely labeling items which are essentially products of foreign countries, or partially assembled in foreign countries should be labeled "Made in U.S.A." if they are shipped to the U.S. for final assembly. I believe that concerned Americans, as well as consumers of American products in other parts of the world, want to know where the goods they purchase originate. Everyone must be able to shop intelligently, and to do that they must have confidence in the labeling procedures of the FTC. American consumers who wish to purchase goods which are domestically made will clearly be hampered from doing so if the labels on those goods are ambiguous and may not mean what they say. Please do not allow this to happen. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. I look forward to hearing that the proposed changes to the current policy will not be made, and the intent and spirit of the original ruling is maintained. Sincerely, Gloria Gonzales
