Federal Trade Commission Received Documents P894219 Jan 2 1996 B18354900020 Secretary Dr. and Mrs. Herbert W. Samenfeld 13631 East Marina Drive #603 Aurora, Colorado 80014-3733 December 28, 1995 Office of the Secretary FTC, Room 159 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20580 Re: "Made in America: To whom it may concern: It is my understanding that you are considering revising standards governing the use of "Made in America" and "Made in USA" labels. Please make whatever rules you are now using more strict and definitive. When I examine cloth or other labels, I am pleased to see "Made in the USA" because that is what I want to buy. I do not wish to be hoodwinked into buying foreign made goods. I also do not want to buy goods made by foreign nationals in the territory of Samoa because the manufacturer claims it was made in the USA. The USA is the fifty United States of America, and that is all! There are, of course, more complex issues involving parts or materials made elsewhere and assembled here or made here and assembled abroad. They can be labeled to say just that as many of them are. In general, I want to know that "Made in America" means completely, or almost completely, made here. The Honda made in Ohio is an American car as nearly as I can tell with a minimum of parts from elsewhere. The Ford made in Mexico is not an American car. Again, please make "Made in the USA" mean what it says! Sincerely yours, Herbert W. Samenfeld
