Online Profiling;
FTC & Commerce Department to Hold Workshop

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Robert Pitofsky and Commerce Secretary William M. Daley will open a public workshop on Monday, November 8, 1999, on online profiling, the practice of tracking information about consumers' preferences and interests online and using that information to create targeted advertising on Web sites. Introductory remarks also will be made by Peter Swire, chief counselor for privacy, U.S. Government. The workshop is jointly sponsored by the FTC and the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration.
