The Commission has had a long-standing commitment to ensuring that existing laws are applied in a manner that preserves vital consumer protection safeguards without unreasonably hampering economic growth. The Commission has been particularly active on matters concerning online privacy. As a result, consumer confidence, which is vital to the growth of the global online marketplace, has undoubtedly increased. I, therefore, look forward to an enlightening discussion of online profiling, its effects on consumer privacy, and the efficacy of self-regulatory efforts.
