Re: Consumer Privacy 1997-Request to Participate & Comment, P954807

The Commercial Internet eXchange Association ("CIX"), the largest association of Internet service provicers ("ISPs") in the United States and the world, requests an opportunity to participate in Workshop II of the Consumer Privacy 1997 Workshop.

While most of the Commission's attention has been devoted to privacy practices at web sites, CIX believes that Internet service providers have a positive role to play with regard to some of the issues raised in the Commission's Notice - such as unsolicited e-mail advertising ("spamming") and browser technologies. CIX's witness would present information regarding ISP practices.

CIX is in the process of consulting with its members, and intends to submit more detailed comments closer to the date of the Workshop addressing questions raised in the Commission's Notice.

If you have any questions regarding this submission, please do not hesitate to contact me at (703 ) 709-8200.

Sincerely,

Barbara A. Dooley
