FTC: Consumer Privacy Comments Concerning Charles Pollard--P974806 Charles

July 7, 1997 Chairman, Federal Trade Commission Re: Support of Self Regulation Dear Mr. Chairman: In response to the Commission's request for comments following the Jun 10, 1997 hearings, be advised that private investigators are in favor of self regulation. We are businessmen, responsible for our actions, and properly insured. The data we access and use in our investigations is absolutly essential to our clients. Necessary information is hard enough to gain at this point. If we are cut off from access to what are now public records we will be crippled. For the most part, those who complain about our access are the persons with something to hide. Our access to various public and other records is the backbone of our industry. Most of my clients are insurance companies and law firms. Our computer accesss is mainly directed at insurance/lawsuit fraud. Our access simply helps us get at the truth. What is wrong with that? Privacy issues can be managed though self regulation. Most private investigators are very responsible and able to handle these issues. Sincerely, Charles PollardCharles Pollard |
