The Federal Trade Commission's
Settlement with ChoicePoint

The purpose of this webpage is to provide information to consumers who believe they may have suffered out-of-pocket losses as a result of identity theft caused by the data breach at ChoicePoint Inc.

In 2006, the FTC, the nation’s consumer protection agency, settled a lawsuit alleging that ChoicePoint sold information about consumers to people who turned out to be identity thieves. The settlement required ChoicePoint to reimburse consumers who experienced identity theft caused by the security breach.

With the assistance of law enforcement, the Federal Trade Commission identified consumers who may have experienced out-of-pocket expenses due to identity theft connected with the alleged security lapses at ChoicePoint Inc. The FTC mailed claim forms for reimbursement to those consumers and, after reviewing the claims, provided reimbursement.

The FTC is no longer accepting claim forms for reimbursement under the redress program. More information is available by calling toll-free at 1-888-884-8772, or by emailing cpredress@ftc.gov.
